SELF-EVALUATION AND PEER EVALUATION TOOL FOR DESIGN AND ENGINEERING TEAMS: EXPERIMENT CONDUCTED IN A DESIGN STUDIO

The research is aimed at presenting the results of an experiment conducted in a Design and Engineering design studio, which is part of the curricula of a master course. During the experiment, a new educational experience of self- and peer evaluation has been proposed to the class.
A preliminary analysis indeed disclosed that many students had not used before any tool to tackle assess the efficiency of the collaboration, even though most of them worked in teams since the first year of their bachelor. This lack of self and collective reflection often determined a low conflict resolution and a lack of awareness of the individual soft skills acquired within studio-based courses (i.e. communication skills, collaborative skills).
We, therefore, designed a self- and peer evaluation tool, based on the CATME Likert-Scale Instrument, amid at improving teamwork and to stimulate self- and collective reflection on the collaboration. Hence, we structured an activity to stimulate self- and peer evaluation in three key moments of the design studio.
The tool has been tested during the three months studio to assess its impact on design teams’ dynamics and to evaluate its role in fostering students’ self-reflection.
Our test revealed that the implementation of a structured self- and peer evaluation tool could improve teamwork, providing a safe condition to constructively discuss collaboration. Besides, the tool stimulated the students to self-reflect about the soft-skills they improved through the team collaboration.
The paper discusses the self- and peer evaluation in a studio-based course and presents the designed activity to show how it can enhance the whole learning experience.
